May 18: The Homecoming

On February 28, 2017, I retired from my position, as the Librarian for African Studies and African American Studies, at Duke University, and rejoined the Peace Corps.

Yesterday, at 11:30 p.m., my flight landed, at RDU International and I returned home. The funny thing is I no longer have a home, here. I gave away almost every item I owned, to join the Peace Corps.

Although short on a place to hang my hat, I do have many good friends here.

I spent the morning with one such friend. We caught up, over brunch, at the Mad Hatter. Next, we went to an outlet mall. I purchased a belt. Then, we circled back around to Durham and stopped for drinks, at the Durham Hotel.

My evening was spent with another friend, one who is letting me stay with her. She lives directly across the street from the East Duke Campus.

We ended up at the Carolina Theater, for a Doris Day tribute. Day passed away Monday, May 13.

I can’t think of a better way to spend my first day, in the USA, after 27 months of Peace Corps service. –GGT
